Oh The Humanity!

You know, we humans have a way of making these cute, philosophical sounding, “proclamations” without really thinking them through. For example, take this little image I saw on Facebook the other day:

A War On Money And Jobs

Which, initially, I thought was cool. That is, until I remembered that there’s been a War on Poverty going on in this country since 1964 – 7 years longer than the War on Drugs and 37 years longer than the War on Terror! From where I’m sitting, I just don’t see how can proclaim victory in that “War” either…

Which, I guess, is why I wasn’t surprised in the least by Bill Cosby’s speech to the NAACP:

They’re standing on the corner and they can’t speak English. I can’t even talk the way these people talk: Why you ain’t, Where you is, What he drive, Where he stay, Where he work, Who you be… And I blamed the kid until I heard the mother talk. And then I heard the father talk.

Everybody knows it’s important to speak English except these knuckleheads. You can’t be a doctor with that kind of crap coming out of your mouth. In fact you will never get any kind of job making a decent living.

People marched and were hit in the face with rocks to get an education, and now we’ve got these knuckleheads walking around. The lower economic people are not holding up their end in this deal. These people are not parenting. They are buying things for kids. $500 sneakers for what? And they won’t spend $200 for Hooked on Phonics.

I am talking about these people who cry when their son is standing there in an orange suit. Where were you when he was 2? Where were you when he was 12? Where were you when he was 18 and how come you didn’t know that he had a pistol? And where is the father? Or who is his father?

People putting their clothes on backward: Isn’t that a sign of something gone wrong? People with their hats on backward, pants down around the crack, isn’t that a sign of something? Or are you waiting for Jesus to pull his pants up? Isn’t it a sign of something when she has her dress all the way up and got all type of needles [piercing] going through her body?

What part of Africa did this come from? We are not Africans. Those people are not Africans; they don’t know a thing about Africa. With names like Shaniqua, Taliqua and Mohammed and all of that crap, and all of them are in jail.

Brown or black versus the Board of Education is no longer the white person’s problem. We have got to take the neighborhood back. People used to be ashamed. Today a woman has eight children with eight different ‘husbands’ — or men or whatever you call them now. We have millionaire football players who cannot read. We have million-dollar basketball players who can’t write two paragraphs. We as black folks have to do a better job. Someone working at Wal-Mart with seven kids, you are hurting us. We have to start holding each other to a higher standard.

We cannot blame the white people any longer.

American Overlook

Of course, I can’t claim any particular innocence when it comes to actually getting off my ass and doing something about the problems in our world. Hell, I was so freaked out during the 60s that I spent most of my childhood chasing dreams of getting the hell of this rock. That is until, years later, another voice of wisdom poked a few perfectly placed holes in them…

Which, I suppose, is why I spend so much time these days wondering just WTF is wrong with us…

Oh yeah, I forgot…

  1. A blistering post, Izaak.

I don’t know much about George Carlin, but whenever I’m directed to a clip on YouTube, I’m astounded by his wisdom and his caustic delivery. The colonising deep space clip was genius. I would’ve appreciated the other one better if the music wasn’t so overpowering. I had to stop playing it. Is Bill Hicks the spawn of Carlin? They certainly have the same drive and ideas. I wish HIcks was still here. He’d have so much to say on what’s going on in this world now, he wouldn’t know where to start. As for Bill Cosby, he’s brilliant. As usual.

    • Thanks Pie. I do apologize for the poor quality of the videos. My bad back just can’t hang in the like it used to when it comes to sorting through them. I “grew up,” as it were, on the comedy of Bill Cosby and George Carlin, and I think they both deserve far more credit than they’ve been given for helping us “keep it real.” Embarrassingly enough, I actually had to do a little searching to remind myself of who Bill Hicks was:

The guy was just plain brilliant! And I can see why Google associates him with another great one we lost:

      Thanks again Pie! 😀

  2. Izaak, isn’t that from the Pound Cake Speech? I remember Cosby got a lot of flak from the African American community when he made that address. Us minorities (Latina here) are too stubborn when it comes to being smacked upside the head; we don’t recognize it for the wake-up call that it is. In the end, the memories of struggle end up slipping away, so younger and younger generations have no idea how hard it all was. (I feel this way about young women these days, too — but don’t get me started!)
