Wouldn’t It Be Nice?

Having learned at a very young age how rarely my interpretations of the world around me lines up with those of other people, I’ve never, ever, felt comfortable assuming I could predict how anyone would react to anything – not even the people I’ve been close to. Take other men for example. On the surface at least, we all seem to have in common a love for gadgets, action, and attractive women. You know, guy stuff. But in the end, almost none of the guys I’ve known have had much interest at all in discussing why we are the way we are and what our likes and dislikes say about us.

Anyway, my son was off with my other kids celebrating Mother’s Day with my ex-wife and her new husband yesterday. And, being the glutton for punishment that I am, I found myself watching – and actually enjoying – a movie called It’s Complicated on TV last night. It’s one of those “Romantic Comedies” that we guys often refer to as “Chick Flicks” – and tend to avoid watching if at all possible. The thing is, I actually like romantic comedies and avoid watching them only because I tend to get all “weepy” when I do. I have yet to have another guy admit to me that they feel the same way.

At any rate, as I’m not so good at describing a movie without going on and on and on, I thought I’d just go with the synopsis provided by Wikipedia:

It’s Complicated is a 2009 American romantic comedy film written and directed by Nancy Meyers. It stars Meryl Streep as a successful bakery owner and single mother of three who starts a secret affair with her ex-husband, played by Alec Baldwin, ten years after their divorce – only to find herself drawn to another man: her architect Adam (portrayed by Steve Martin).

Anyone who’s followed this blog long enough, and those who’ve read my 42, 39, 17, 10, and 4 post in particular, should understand why watching It’s Complicated struck such a nerve with me, and why I haven’t been able to get this song out of my head ever since…

Yeah, that would be very nice…

I want ice water.

  1. I really like Alec Baldwin: he sends himself up mercilessly with everything he does, since … oh, since he began to look older than a handsome young bloke. And having watched the trailer of that movie, it looks pretty bloody funny. Must be something wrong with me.
I can’t comment on you as a man liking it, or on any man’s liking it.
Let’s try a test: did you like “Galaxy Quest” ???

    • I like Alec Baldwin too M-R, and he was excellent in this movie. You should definitely check it out if you get the chance. To answer your question, I absolutely loved Galaxy Quest, though I don’t know anyone else who did. Hell, I probably would have watched the TV show too, had there actually been one! πŸ™‚

      • Good. It was our favourite movie of all times. Stringer loved it as much as I did. So there. If you’re some weak useless wimp re movies, all I can say is that my beloved husband must have been too !
I have it on DVD, and watch it roughly annually – although I’d guess it’s more often than that. πŸ™‚

    • I think you’d like it too Rosie. I’ll warn you though: it’s one of those ‘laughing through the tears’ type movies. At least it was for me… 😳
