This Lady’s Got Skillz!

My friend Rosie posted the following video to my Facebook timeline, along with this intriguing statement:

Knowing you know and love music as I …..thought I would share this with you…..what talent and zest for life…..she has played with the best…

Wow! So who is this phenomenal lady?

Carol Kaye (born March 24, 1935) is an American musician, best known as one of the most prolific and widely heard bass guitarists in history, playing on an estimated 10,000 recording sessions in a 55-year career.

As a session musician, Kaye was the bassist on many Phil Spector and Brian Wilson productions in the 1960s and 1970s. She played guitar on Ritchie Valens’ “La Bamba” and is credited with the bass tracks on several Simon & Garfunkel hits and many film scores by Quincy Jones and Lalo Schifrin. One of the most popular albums Carol contributed to was the Beach Boys’ “Pet Sounds.”

If for no other reason, you should go to that Wikipedia page just to check out the list of “Associated Acts” in the sidebar! And if that’s not enough…

  1. Fascinating. I’ve always thought music was nothing without the bass. I crank the volume all the way and the bass even further. I have to feel it as much as hear it.

  2. Like it? – I’m MAD ABOUT it ! This post encapsulates everything we ancients try to get across to you youngsters: we may look like caricatures of ourselves, but WE ARE THE SAME AS EVER WE WERE !!!

  3. I am also a female bass player, and am ashamed that I have never heard of Carol Kaye. I’m going out there now to find out more. Thanks so much for posting this!

  4. I saw her play more than once for the price of a couple of drinks. I was first surprised that “the best bass player” is a woman! I felt like somehow I should have known, but I heard only the spoken name. Then it was true. She was and maybe is the best. The best of times.

    • As impressed as I am with Ms. Kaye, I have a nagging feeling that there’s a relationship between my not liking “live” music and the fact that so many great songs were recorded by studio musicians rather than the bands that take the stage! O_o
