I’d almost forgotten, but an article from Huff-Post Science reminded me that today is the 28th anniversary of the Challenger Disaster. I’ve provided a link to that article below, but here’s a couple of short videos I found while searching YouTube for the one in that article…
I wonder if I’ll ever be able to watch that without crying? I don’t know. Perhaps that’s why my mind is trying to forget…
At any rate, I recommend that you read Huff-Post’s Challenger Disaster Home Video Surfaces After 28 Years (EXCLUSIVE) to follow up.
To the memory of seven brave souls…

The crew of Challenger mission STS-51-L, El Onizuka, Mike Smith, Christa McAuliffe, Dick Scobee, Greg Jarvis, Judy Resnik, and Ron McNair, died tragically in the explosion of their spacecraft during the launch of STS-51-L from the Kennedy Space Center about 11:40 a.m., EST, on January 28, 1986. The explosion occurred 73 seconds into the flight as a result of a leak in one of two Solid Rocket Boosters that ignited the main liquid fuel tank.

It was so sad. I was in second grade. We were so excited because there was a teacher on the flight. We had that exact photo posted in our classroom.

I had just turned 30 Becca, and, because I had dreams of going someday myself, I was just as excited as you about a teacher being on the flight. A very sad day indeed, in so many ways… 😐

Sorry, I can’t watch that again. I’m almost in tears just being reminded of that day. Hard to believe it’s been that long.

The years certainly have flown by. Maybe we’ll get lucky and age-related memory loss will gradually dull the pain… 😐

I remember that day so well and the sheer shock when it happened.

It was indeed shocking Jo. I was on a road trip, trying to get to a hotel in Las Vegas in time to see the launch live, when I heard about it on the news. The rest of the drive in to Vegas was a total blur…
