Yet another set of awesome images by way of the Visual News blog. These were actually linked to in the source for my last post and, as I did in that one, I’ve gone to their source for more…
The images we put before you today all have the unique quality of being a bit mysterious and simultaneously beautiful… it’s the kind of thing that draws you in, keeps you on guard and begs you to understand more. In one example, a woman gazes peacefully into the distance while the subtle image of a dark train tunnel rolls away before her eyes. Is this simply a reflection on a window before her or is their something more etherial at work? These are the unnerving dualities that play into many of Bill Domonkos’ animated GIFs.
Domonkos has a talent for taking vintage photographs and adding just the right twist to make it really come to life. Scenes that were once rather common, suddenly take on entirely new directions, colliding different ideas together while revealing the workings of an active and imaginative mind.
The Hungarian-born, San Francisco-based visual artist and experimental filmmaker often combines 2D and 3D computer animation, special effects, photography, video and manipulated archive film footage into his works, frequently employing imagery under a creative commons license. His work has been featured internationally in cinemas, at film festivals, and in galleries and museums. You can see more of his fiml and animation work on Youtube, Vimeo, Tumblr or at bdom.com.

I know there’s technology that makes this stuff possible, but what kind of mind thinks, “So I’ll cut off her hands and have smoke come out” or “Now I’ll make a car drive a circular road through those two faces.” Creative, for sure, but … weird.
