The Eve Of Destruction?

“A lie told often enough becomes the truth.”

~ Vladimir Lenin

Well my friends, the “Big Day” is just about here and, despite the massive “End Of The World” debunking infographic I included in my What, Me Worry? post, it seems that many of us are still biting our nails and pulling our hair out over tomorrow’s expected “End Of The World” connected to the supposed “conclusion” of the Mayan calendar.

It certainly hasn’t helped that the TV networks we look to for objective nature and science reporting, like NatGeo, Discovery, and History, keep pounding away at us with shows about it. Of course, for me these shows are at least a welcome departure from usual “true life of Jesus” crap they normally show at this time of year. But hey, maybe we’re about to find out if Heaven really is hotter than Hell. Oh wait, I don’t think the Mayan “End Of The World” myth included a Christian afterlife… Did it?

At any rate, I’m sure we’ll all wake up on Saturday with our world intact enough to move on to other horrendous nightmare scenarios.

Like another “Snowmageddon” perhaps…

Or battling over that “perfect gift” while Christmas shopping at the last minute…

Or something even scarier, like that big “Fiscal Cliff” thing…

And, failing all of that, there’s always that ever growing army of assault-rifle-bearing-autistic-children-on-the-verge-of-committing-mass-murder to worry about…

The sad truth is that we just can’t seem to stop ourselves from conjuring up reasons to be afraid (both plausible and not so plausible), or from resting our “salvation” hopes on mythical “superheroes” and real-life humans who can’t possibly live up to the hype. And yet we never seem to look inside ourselves to where the real “demons” live…

All of which makes me wonder if we’re subconsciously diverting our attention away from a deeper truth we’d really rather not face. Like the variety of ways in which we’ve “traditionally” dealt with our fears…

“So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself — nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.”

~ Franklin D. Roosevelt

  1. Damn! I lost my whole pithy draft! My net book met its’ eve of destruction early. Death or near death came on 12-13-12 at mid-day. That is when my ‘Netgear Signal’ disappeared. I think it was lack of money. I still make connection, but they (Gmail) ignores me. It’s a long story, but I want to get this out while I still have the signal from the Public Library. I WILL BE BACK!!!!! Philip

PS I don’t think that ATT likes my antique browser. It tries but never connects. I think that it is time to get my own ‘Wizard” name of Willie to check this net book out and find out how much I have screwed it up. With the “Fiscal Cliff” in the future I think that Willie might like a paying job! There are a whole bunch of upgrades stored in the “Devil’s Lunchbox” that i was unaware of. Perhaps it can be fixed? All my machines have names.

  3. Nope, my net book is still in trouble. There are other ways.

OH! The end of the world is now one hour and nine minutes late. Since there is no new Mayan long count calendar I guess we are safe until all the ice slides off Greenland!!!!

    • Wow Phillip, either WordPress was VERY late in notifying me of your comment or you live on the other side of some weird warp in time! 😕

At any rate, I’m sorry about the net book and I’m so looking forward to that VERY cold drink! 😀
