My friend Rosie sent this to me in an email months ago, but I just didn’t like my presentation options until WordPress introduced the new gallery mosaic feature…
TALK ABOUT AN ARTIST! THIS GUY IS DEFINITELY ONE!
Unbelievable Wood Carvings:
The Unique Wood-Chip Sculptures of Sergei Bobkov
53-year-old Sergei Bobkov has patented a unique technique of creating amazing sculptures out of Siberian cedar wood-chips. “It’s not very interesting to do what others can. To create something out of nothing in a completely new way is far more inspiring.” This is how Sergei Bobkov explains the unique form of art that he created. He says many people compare his artworks to taxidermy, because they both look so much like the animals they replicate, but Sergei believes they are as different as light and darkness. Whereas taxidermy is all about death, his wood-chip art symbolizes life.
This resident of Kozhany, Russia, has developed his very own technique, that prevents wood-chips from falling apart in time. After creating about 100-150 chips, from 2-3 inch long cedar stick, he puts them in water for several days. Then, making use of his surgical precision, he carves the chips into any shape he needs.
Sergey has been doing this for some time now, but he has only created 11 wood-chip sculptures. That’s because just one of these incredible artworks takes around six months to complete, at a work rate of 10 to 12 hours a day, with no days off. Sergei Bobkov focuses on wildlife creatures, and he studies their anatomy for months, before starting work on a sculpture.
Even though he was offered $17,000 for his wood-chip eagle, Sergei’s Bobkov declined, saying his art is not for sale.
The new feature still defies all the usual centering techniques, but I was able to achieve the appearance of centering with some additional left padding… 🙄

Thanks. If I only had the patience, and, of course, the talent… 😀

That’s pretty incredible. I wonder how many slivers that dude has endured for his art. I gotta say, though, I wouldn’t buy it. It’s really cool, but how are you gonna dust this thing? And what happens if you FALL on it!?

That’s my Dood: seeing the things only he could see! 😆
But seriously, as an old hillbilly who’s often fantasized of days spent “whittling” away at pieces of wood, this art is just to cool not to admire! 😀

Dibbs on the owl!! Incredible. Whoever offered only $17,000 for the eagle was a cheapskate.
Dood’s right, though. Dusting would be a bitch. If you couldn’t keep them in a room with a great filtration system, you’d have to keep them in glass cases.

The owl is cool, but the critters on the tree (whatever the hell they are – squirrels?) are my favs. And I totally agree on the price for the eagle!! 😀

That owl is phenomenal! Shoot, they all are. The furry ones look, well, furry. But, yeah… the owl stood out for me, too.

The owl is awesome Michele, but I’ll leave the bidding war to you and PT while I continue drooling over the squirrels! 😀

Reminds me of the CBS 60 Minutes segment on savant syndrome. One child was born with the ability to sketch something like a horse’s head with virtual photographic accuracy from almost any perspective. My reading of the Wiki page on it would explain this artist’s compulsive and obsessive behavior. Amazing stuff.

I’ve written some of my own thoughts on the issues you raise Jim, most recently in Genius or Obsession? and more thoroughly in Autism and The Urban Hermit, in an effort to explore my own mental health issues. And while there’s nothing in the text accompanying the email that points directly to a savant syndrome related disorder, it is pretty obvious that Mr. Bobkov has the intensity of focus and at least some of the related tendency towards social isolation associated with such disorders. The question is where he actually falls on the line between it being consciously self-imposed and it being imposed on him entirely by his physiology.

So I just went back and read the whole thing. The images caught my attention right away… Six months? 10-12 hours a day??? Talk about a universe of patience! 1-2 hours for one day would be more than enough I can handle… That is, if I don’t accidentally cut a finger off first.

Haha! Now you get the “obsession” discussion between Jim and I! 😀
