Well, I think my “disturbing information” quota has been filled for the day…
Japanese artist Isao Hashimoto has created a beautiful, undeniably scary time-lapse map of the 2053 nuclear explosions which have taken place between 1945 and 1998, beginning with the Manhattan Project’s “Trinity” test near Los Alamos and concluding with Pakistan’s nuclear tests in May of 1998. This leaves out North Korea’s two alleged nuclear tests in this past decade (the legitimacy of both of which is not 100% clear).
Each nation gets a blip and a flashing dot on the map whenever they detonate a nuclear weapon, with a running tally kept on the top and bottom bars of the screen. Hashimoto, who began the project in 2003, says that he created it with the goal of showing “the fear and folly of nuclear weapons.” It starts really slow — if you want to see real action, skip ahead to 1962 or so — but the buildup becomes overwhelming.

Now I knew those countries had nukes. And I knew there had been lots of testing. But…
2053 Nuclear Explosions!
WTF?!?!
I want ice water.

That was a very cool video. I was not at all surprised by the number of test detonations, but it was interesting to see where they took place. You know, there are certain areas of the US where property is really really cheap…

Sheesh, how many times do you need to test the technology once you’ve got it? What was the last flag that went up? Looked Middle Eastern, but I couldn’t identify it off the top of my head. And I noticed the Israelis weren’t included. Everyone says they have nukes but they’ve never admitted it. Where do you suppose they do their testing?

Sure was glad to see the testing drop off precipitously after 1990.

This report only covered the period from 1945 to 1998. I’d love to see an updated version!

The last detonation was by Pakistan in May of 1998. I’m not sure why Israeli tests aren’t included. Maybe it’s because the ones they were supplied ready-made by the west, or they occurred after the 1998 end of this report.

If China and Japan carry on there could be more dropping.
