R.I.P. Sally Ride, First American Woman in Space

Such sad news. She was a true pioneer!

Lights in the Dark

Sad news in space: Dr. Sally Ride, the first American woman to fly in space, died today, July 23 2012. She had just turned 61 in May.

“Sally Ride broke barriers with grace and professionalism – and literally changed the face of America’s space program. The nation has lost one of its finest leaders, teachers and explorers. Our thoughts and prayers are with Sally’s family and the many she inspired. She will be missed, but her star will always shine brightly.”

– NASA Administrator Charles Bolden

    • P.S. My email notification of this post showed its title as “27697.” It’s not the first I’ve gotten from you showing a number instead of a title. Don’t know if that’s a bug or what.

      • Damned WP reblogs. The numbers are automatically assign by the system, which is apparently too stupid to actually use the name of the post for for email notifications and Recent Posts lists. I’ve taken to adding the name myself after the fact (which it leaves blank), just so my sidebar makes sense!

    • Frankly, I was embarrassed by how far ahead of us the Russians were when it came to women in space. When all is said and done though, Sally’s ride was an inspiration for everyone hoping for a chance at space travel someday. I was almost convinced that that day was even closer than I’d thought when Christa McAuliffe got her chance…
