Notes From A Friend

A good friend posted the following on my Facebook wall:

An old Cherokee told his grandson, “My son, there is a battle between two wolves inside us all. One is Evil. It is anger, jealousy, greed, resentment, inferiority, lies & ego. The other is Good. It is joy, peace, love, hope, humility, kindness, empathy, & truth.” The boy thought about it, and asked, “Grandfather, which wolf wins?” The old man quietly replied, “The one you feed.”

She also posted this to remind me of the upcoming thirty year anniversary:

Awesome!

  2. Hi,

I have arrived here via Becoming Herself.

And the first post I read is this wonderful story!

This is a story I was introduced to while I was on a retreat a few years ago, the said retreat being in connection with my journey of recovery from alcoholism (now 9 years sober a day at a time).

It is good to meet you

    • Every time I hear one of these proverbs I wish that I’d had more time with my grandfather. A full blooded Native American who just happened to be a Baptist minister too – I’ll bet he had plenty of quotable comments! πŸ˜€

I’ve been up just 3 hours and I’ve already had enough 9/11 reminders to last a lifetime. I plan to spend the rest of my weekend watching sports, sci-fi, ANYTHING other than the news. I just hope events don’t force me to change my mind… 😐

      • Wise Choice …. The News Media has a hidden agenda within it, as it continues to hold the FEAR factor very prominent within our lives.. And while I send out my heartfelt thoughts to all who suffered this Day on 9-11 Ten years ago, and I agree we should never forget our loves ones who perished that day.. We can remember without going back over all the graphic horrors as the Media seems to do as it repeats over and over the tragedies. Let us now Build from it and bring awareness to the Peace that we should all be striving to attain so that horrors of this nature do not occur again..
Thanking you for commenting IzaakMak upon my posts and wishing you A β€˜Peaceful’ week..

        • Well said Sue. If ever there was an opportunity to learn from history, this is it. And I love coming to your place to get some perspective. I don’t always know what to say in response, but I do love to read your stuff! πŸ˜€

  3. Aah, “Silent Lucidity,” one of the best song titles ever. I wish that I could say that I’m a big Queensryche fan, but I’m not, only this song, and I truly hate it when that happens. This song just blew me away the first time that I heard it. It’s just so freaking awesome.

As to the two wolves story, I agree with others that Native American homilies are much powerful. Having said that, I wish that I could say that I feed the right wolf, but most of the time, I don’t.

    • I’m with you on Queensryche music. It wasn’t until after I told a co-worker how disappointed I was with the rest of the “Empire” album β€œSilent Lucidity” is from, that he informed that most of their stuff falls into the “headbanger” category. Still, they did get this one so very right.

Sadly, I’m with you as well when it comes to feeding the “wrong” wolf. I suspect that my friend sent me that story because she sensed that my depression troubles were at a bad point. She would know, since she got to know me quite well working as the VA hospital’s Day Treatment activities coordinator. She’s the same beautiful soul who sent the vast majority of the stuff I’ve posted to the E-Mail Funnies volume to me. Another way to help keep me in good spirits I suspect. πŸ˜€
