My Post Rapture Sermon

I’ve always been fascinated by the odd, and sometimes violently controversial, distinctions we humans make amongst ourselves. Especially when those distinctions are so subtle that outsiders might have a hard time discerning them. Kinda like these guys from my Black On The Right Side post:

Bele and Lokai

Star Trek's Bele and Lokai

This can be particularly true when it comes to religious distinctions. And judging by the coverage of yesterday’s failed “Rapture” event, it’s pretty clear that even the most skeptical amongst us are as fascinated as I am by just how wide the religious spectrum is. But what are the roots of these distinctions? Personally, I’ve found this clip from Monty Python’s Life of Brian to be quite helpful:

Now I know that all this fascination with the supernatural is rooted in the desire to escape the apparent hopelessness of human existence, but the fact is that most of our troubles are of our own making – and it’s not like we aren’t equipped to fix them. And though I’m about as skeptical as they come, I’ve still spent a LOT of time absorbed into these fantasies myself. In fact, one of the inspirations behind the name of this blog comes from a line by the “Nadine Cross” character in Stephen King’s The Stand, after she’s finally hooked up with the “bad boy” of her dreams:

So where does all this leave us? Well I’m pretty sure that those who can think of nothing beyond escaping the Hell we’ve made of this wonderful world will continue sowing the seeds of discord, hoping that those seeds will grow into the apocalyptic ending they think we all deserve. What I’m not so sure of is whether those who want to inspire a more “reasoned” approach to solving our problems will keep finding the motivation they need to continue their struggle as well. I only know that it’s getting more and more difficult for me.

Let’s sing our way out, shall we?

I want ice water.

  1. saw this status on FB and loved it: “ATTN: ALL JUDGEMENT & DOOMSDAY BELIEVERS:: Due to tecnical difficulties… The scheduled END OF WORLD event has been postponed. We apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you. If you have already quit your job, given away your life savings or liquidated all of your assets… Ooopps… our bad! We will attempt another doomsday event in Dec. 2012. Please stay tuned. OH… Have a nice day!”

but Life of Brian is one of my all-time favourite movies and that part when they discuss the significance of the sandal is superb, also the stoning part is a huge laugh-out, ‘Jehova, jehova…’ 😀 but Mak, don’t give up the motivation, there are good people around but it’s just that the loonies and put you downers are louder… shame… Now I have to go watch the Stand again, love the book and the movie…

    • Sargastic Irrevalence posted a pretty funny one about the big delay as well: Apocalypse Delay.

I love everything I’ve ever seen by Monty Python, but Life of Brian has always been my favorite as well. The Stand was the first Stephen King novel I ever read. It’s funny how the TV adaptations of his stuff are better than the ones for the big screen.

I actually had to rip and upload the Nadine Cross clip myself. But now that I know how, it opens up some new avenues for me. Don’t know why it has that annoying pop at the beginning though! 😀

  2. Rincewind is so right! D-I-D-D-O!

This will annoy most, but its our choice to embrace what comes our way. Negative or Positive. And I know, most days it seems like only negativity comes our way so we have no choice. But, I believe, it also becomes habitual. We embrace negativity, and therefore negativity becomes all we see. It’s hard, it sucks and it’s certainly not easy, but finding the smaller voices intertwined in the loonies and the downers and Rincewind points out, is what takes real strength, courage, and heck, I’mma say it…BALLS.

Though, don’t get me wrong — it ain’t easy. But I swear to you, it’s so friggin’ worth it!

    Hugs.

  3. I’m kinda feeling sorry for old Harold now. It’s a friggin religious marketing nightmare. I wonder how many believers will now question the existence of God? No God, no heaven, no external salvation, just a bunch of messed up people living on a globe that won’t stop spinning….we’re screwed 😦

    • Oh I have no doubt that old Harold will come out smelling like a rose. I’m sure he’s got his “how do I spin this to my advantage” wheels churning away, and he’s also got the old “there’s a sucker born every minute” thing going for him as well! 🙂

        • I don’t know Loon. I’m betting there are a LOT of people that would like the world to end on 7/4/11. Maybe that’s what will spark the religious war to end all religious wars! Hlahlahlahlahla! 😆

  4. Many people live in a hell of coincidence, that is, being born into a situation, or hell being brought by natural disasters.
IF you have “made your own hell”, be assured that change is the only permanent thing in this world, and it will get better.

  5. I loved that episode of Star Trek. They should do a remake of that one, but with nostril sizes. “As you can see, my nostrils are wide in the front and narrow in the back, while his are narrow in the front and wide in the back. Obviously he is the inferior race!” And they other guy can respond with, “Your nostrils may be wider in the front, but we narrow nostril in the front people have larger genitalia and we’re more musical!” To which the other guy can respond, “that’s a complete fallacy which your people have thrown in our faces for decades. Someone bring me a ruler. Metric please.”

    • That was my favorite episode as well. And while I’m all for doing Star Trek remakes (any and all actually), I’d lean more towards basing this one on the genetics behind balding. It CAN’T be a coincidence that the members of my family who’ve gone bald also have some very serious personality disorders. I’m just as certain that that’s the REAL reason the Borg chose Picard to use against the federation! 😆
