Jewish Law (via Grumpy old fart!!!)

This is a hilarious, tongue-in-cheek, look at living by biblical law!

Recently I received the following email from a friend; I found it so amusing that I just had to share it. Orthodoxy has a lot to answer for. In her radio show, Dr Laura Schlesinger said that, as an observant Orthodox Jew, homosexuality is an abomination according to Leviticus 18:22, and cannot be condoned under any circumstance. The following response is an open letter to Dr. Laura, penned by a US resident, which was posted on the Internet. It' … Read More

    • It’s so hard to speak my mind without hurting my religious friends and family. As loony as their beliefs are, I know that they don’t mean any harm and they do seem to need their faith so much. With that being said, however, I have to admit that being surrounded by people I think are nuts is a bit disconcerting! 😐

  1. I too had read that sometime in the past but it’s still funny reading it again.

This time I’ve made a copy of it so I can access it again quickly when I want to

    Thanks for posting the link

    • I love it when the nut jobs are refuted using their own evidence. I’d do it myself if I weren’t afraid that reading to much of that nonsense would push me over the edge that I’m already standing waaaaaaaay to close to! 🙄

  2. Just doing some quick reading on the subject it seems many Orthodox Jewish sources cite that it’s not Homosexuality that the bible says is wrong, rather sex in general that isn’t for procreation. So no sex for pleasure.

  3. IzaakMak – – I thought you might enjoy seeing this clip from the West Wing that was brilliantly done and very similiar. For a little background: President Bartlett is meeting with Radio Personalities and when he enters the room he sees a very similiar Dr. Laura type — and… well, he gives her a piece of his mind. It’s one of my favorite scenes — I thought you might enjoy it too — very much like this letter!

Thanks for the link — made me laugh so hard!

    • Wow Carmen, I feel like I’ve been caught with my pants down! The West Wing is one of my all-time favorite shows and I can’t believe that I failed to recognize something so absolutely similar to one of my favorite scenes. 😳

I guess the question now is whether the letter in the post I reblogged was fabricated based on the scene from the show, or if the scene was adapted from an actual letter written to Dr. Laura? If I recall correctly, she has been raising a ruckus for a couple of decades now! 😕

      • I love that we both have so much in common! In all fairness, I own all of the West Wing on DVD and watched them waaaayyyy too many times back in the day! But yes, one of my favorite shows as well (and one of the rare “not sci-fi” shows I own — yeah, I’m Sci-Fi geek too!).

I’m not sure it really matters which came first: the chicken or the egg. Aaron Sorkin delivered a brilliant scene and made a great point in a visual manner so I’m good either way it happened! No worries on my end. Oh, and find it again, rather timely to bring up so it’s all good — unfortunately, till we get over these ridiculous fears we have about Gay folk, letters and shows like this, will continue to be relevent, brilliant and, unfortunately, necessary.

        Thanks again!

    • I almost stood up and cheered after watching this. I loved this show SO MUCH! Can’t think of any better ones offhand except maybe the very very old “East Side, West Side” with George C. Scott.

  4. I love both the letter and that particular West Wing scene, which is one of my alltime favorites.

My own tolerance for religious intolerance has multiplied by fifty-fold in the last few years. I am so tired of hearing that this country is a christian nation as declared by the founding fathers. More tired of having Bible verses bandied about as proof positive of anything.

    • As much as I joke about the silliness inspired by irrational beliefs on this blog, I have to admit that I’ve never really expressed just how deep my concerns about religion go – not even in my Tolerance… Not! series. But I am working up the nerve to post something I’ve been fiddling with as a draft for weeks now. Just to go “all the way,” I might just post it as my own kinda Sunday Sermon. 😯

      • You should do it. You will find the experience incredibly freeing.
I understand your need to keep peace with your family even though your views are diametrically opposed. I find myself in the same situation with my in-laws who are very nice people with very strong-minded opinions about their faith. But I realized at some point that not speaking my mind on my blog–the place that I had created as my own safe haven–would eventually take its toll on me. We all do what we must, I suppose, or if not, then we do what we can.

        • You are absolutely right, of course, and I do intend to publish the post. I’ve more or less given up on the thought that my real family might take an interest in my writing anyway. But I do worry about my on-line family, with whom I communicate a hundred times as much – they’re the ones I don’t want to offend.

I know you can’t see my stats, but if you could, you’d see that the vast majority of those who come to my blog are only here for the funny stuff I post. Hell, I hardly had any visitors at all before I added the E-Mail Funnies. And since most of them don’t leave comments, it’s difficult to predict their reaction.

On the other hand, I guess only the die-hards will bother to read my big sermon anyway… 😀
