Can Science Answer Moral Questions?

From a TED seminar by Sam Harris entitled
“Science Can Answer Moral Questions”

Questions of good and evil, right and wrong are commonly thought unanswerable by science. But Sam Harris argues that science can — and should — be an authority on moral issues, shaping human values and setting out what constitutes a good life.

This is the best answer to this question I’ve ever heard, by far! TED is a small nonprofit devoted to Ideas Worth Spreading. Apparently, their site is chock full of great stuff like this.

I found this precious gem at Metousiosis, to which I’m a proud subscriber!

  1. Something tells me I won’t be sending this to a friend in Florida whose most dog-eared book is the Bible ………. though I would like to !!
    Thanks !

    • If I thought there was a snowball’s change in Hell that they’d actually watch it, I’ve got a few that I’d send it to as well! I almost put this post into the MY Heroes volume as this guy is just that impressive, but it didn’t seem fair to put someone I’ve never heard of until now amongst those who’ve inspired me for so long.

      • It makes you wonder, though. Typically these folks don’t mind letting us know where they stand on some issues that deal with ‘faith’ … yet we kinda tip toe around when it’s our turn to show/tell them where we stand …

        • I’ve spent at least half of my life debating these issues with every one of them that I came across. But then I realized how pointless it was. Not to mention the fact that they outnumber us by more than ten to one. 😯

These days I’m more interested in talking to people who already get it, so that we can prepare ourselves for what’s going to happen when the rest go nuts when no “savior” arrives to bail them out of their crap! 😐

          • Ah yes … Seems I have heard at least a few times “Well, it didn’t happen this time, but, it will happen soon!” Of course my religious friend if Florida was also convinced that life as we know it was gonna go ‘poof’ with the Y2K scare !! Ha !!

            • The problem is that their prophesies of doom are of the “self-fulfilling” variety, and our disbelief WILL NOT protect us from the very real consequences of their actions!
