If You Really Must Know

IzaakMakMy friends call me Mak. I’m a disabled Electronics Engineering Technician, Technical Writer, and Air Force veteran. In case my photo doesn’t make it clear, I come from a mixed heritage that includes Black, White and Native American. And trust me, my heritage – not to mention my appearance, has most definitely had an impact on my life.

I absolutely DO NOT claim to be an expert at or on anything. While I have spent my entire life watching, listening and reading in an effort to understand myself, other people, and the world we live in, I hope I’ll never be warped enough to claim that I have all the answers. And I have faith that no one else will make such a mistake either. It’s like that old joke about the ex-spurt: “Sonny, back when I was just a spurt like you…” I pray that I never come across as such an old fool.

I’ve always loved to write about my thoughts. Although my military training was as a Weather Observer Technician – which appealed to my love of science, and my education was for Electronics Engineering – which appealed to my love of technology, my primary loves have always been philosophy and writing. I didn’t choose them as a career because I had a family and didn’t think that they could produce the kind of immediate income a growing family requires. This Weblog allows me to pursue both while working through my issues with depression, dependence, and isolation in a kind of self-therapy journal.

My favorite music includes Pink Floyd, Rush, Yes, U2, The Eagles, The Moody Blues, The Alan Parsons Project, The Allman Brothers, Styx, Genesis, Vangelis, Queen, Jethro Tull, Led Zeppelin, Steely Dan, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, The Guess Who, Billy Joel, Elton John, Three Dog Knight, Grand Funk Railroad, Stevie Wonder, Gladys Knight, Sly & The Family Stone, and of course The Temptations.

My favorite authors include Ayn Rand, Robert A. Heinlein, Isaac Asimov, Arthur C. Clarke, Stephen King, Stephen R. Donaldson, Orson Scott Card, Michael Crichton, Carl Sagan, Douglas Adams, and the teams of Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle, and Warren Murphy & Richard Sapir.

My favorite movies include Harvey, The Day The Earth Stood Still, The Fountainhead, High Noon, The Sound Of Music, Victor/Victoria, The Andromeda Strain, The Abyss, 2010, Firestarter, The Shining, The Unforgiven, The Mask, Liar Liar, Bruce Almighty, Contact, along with the Alien, Lord Of The Rings, Predator, Spider Man, Star Trek, Star Wars, Superman, The Matrix, and X-Men films, and all of the great comedies about eccentric inventors as well as every movie starring Jerry Lewis. I know I’m asking for disappointment, but will some great visionary please bring Atlas Shrugged to the screen?

My favorites from television include 24, Battlestar Galactica, Boston Legal, Burn Notice, Charley Rose, Criminal Minds, Damages, Eli Stone, Eleventh Hour, Eureka, Flash Forward, Flash Point, Fringe, Frontline, House, Heroes, Joan of Arcadia, Knight Rider, Life, Mind of Mencia, Monk, NCIS, Nova, Numbers, Psyche, Saving Grace, Smallville, Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles, The Daily Show, The Mentalist, The News Hour, The Unit, Two And A Half Men, and all of the CSIs, Law & Orders, Stargates, and Star Treks. Not listed are the innumerable shows with fantastic potential that somehow failed to get the support they deserved. Of these, my all time favorite was The Greatest American Hero.

Please note that none of the above lists are exhaustive, the authors and movies in particular. In all honesty, if a person or a group, through whatever media they choose, causes me to think – especially when good humor is used to do so, chances are I would include it on my list of favorite things. And at the top of that list would be everybody who has ever dared to use great comedy to pry open the eyes of the intentionally blind.

I don’t get out much (as you can see from the above lists). In fact I’m very uncomfortable around other people. I’m even uncomfortable with questions about my discomfort at being around other people. And for those who might wonder why such questions would cause me discomfort, it’s because questions like that evoke the image of people gleefully rubbing their hands together at the prospect of having a ‘weirdo’ they can torture to help alleviate their own anxiety caused by the secret belief that they are weird themselves. Would you feel comfortable saying that to someone?

I want ice water.

  1. Hi Mak,

I am impressed with your poem. Thanks.

I wrote one on the eve of the Inauguration and post it here. Hope you enjoy it.

    Ode to Obama’s Inauguration
    (With apologies to Rudyard Kipling)
    By: Cecil R. Williams

    On the road to Zimbabwe
Where hubris rules o’er our day
and motors slow like dying men
    as Robinhood strikes, today!

    On the road to Zimbabwe
    Obama arrives to say
    ‘Productiveness is not important
    as need is op’word today’

    Oh the road to Zimbabwe
as the Lemmings ‘lights out’ say
    civilization dies in agony while
what might have been, Kipling say!

    “Oh the road to Mandalay
    Where the flyin’-fishes play
An’ the dawn comes up like thunder
    …………………………………………”

    • WOW! A new reader! I am so pleased you like my work. Please feel free to check out my older posts. I talk out serious stuff, but I try to do so with good humor where I can.

I’m always playing around with look and feel of this thing to make it more self-explanatory and easier to navigate. I’ve just added the ability to subscribe by feed reader and/or email.

  3. Hi Mak! Thanks for putting a link to my site here, I really appreciate that. And thanks for your comments. It’s good to know that there are a few people reading the drivel I write. 🙂

    • I’m not sure which comment you’re referring to. I’ve made three, and the last one was little harsh for me and aimed at you. But I do agree that we have philosophical common ground between us. I’ve just lost faith that the private sector (or at least the current crop) can solve a problem that is so twisted up with socialism.

On to more pleasant things. I have not seen “Brazil,” but I love Terry Gilliam’s work so I’ll have to add it to my “to watch” list. I’ve updated the list in this post several times, but not recently. I did warn that the lists were not exhaustive.

  4. OMG, and here I was thinking “I am the only person that thinks Jerry Lewis was a pure genius?”. Mr Bascom,Mr Bascom; Little old lady (Hollywood or bust)am I the only one who thought Jim Carey plagiarized his work?

    Like

    • Oh hell yes! Lewis and a lot more! But then again, that’s probably why he’s popular across multiple generations. It’s kinda like watching all your favorites rolled (twisted?) into one guy. 😀

      Like

      • I couldn’t believe he stole the “little old lady” scene, that was my all time favorite. Oh and the movie (I think it’s “artists and models”) where he touches a painting in an art gallery and the paints wet and he ends up ruining it. Brilliant.

  7. You commented about my post about crushing on fat disabled women. http://rageomatic.wordpress.com/2010/06/03/sex-body-image-bbw-and-disabled-friends/

So I read a few of your blogs. Do you know how incredibly unlikey it is that there are two men on earth who are both Air Force (you prior, I currently), love all the same books, all the same music, and many of the same movies? (A side note: I desperately hope no one ever does Atlas Shrugged. They’ll make it suck. Nicholas Cage as Rearden? Gwyneth Paltrow as Dagny? Antonio Banderas as Francisco d’Anconia? It would be horrible. Only if it can be handled like the recent Lord of the Rings Trilogy, where the director is given the run time and money to make it right would it be worth while.

Anyway, keep up the good work. I hope you swing by blog more often.

    • I too am happy to have run across another kindred soul. Those that I can relate to are quite rare indeed. I also share your reluctance to see someone produce a bastardized version of Atlas Shrugged. I’ve often wondered if I would live to regret the plea I made in this post.

I’m so sick of people trying to twist Ms. Rand’s words in support of things that she would never have supported herself! I don’t know if you noticed it, but I have devoted a volume of this blog to posts intended to make it clear would she did and did not actually support. You can find links to these posts on the In Her Own Words page.

Again, thanks for stopping by. I’ve subscribed to your blog and added it to my blogroll, so you will be hearing from me again. 😀

  8. Hmm … I, too, passed over writing as a career because I thought I’d better study something that promised a steady income. As for your last paragraph, I couldn’t have described myself any better. Most people don’t appreciate the difference between “lonely” and “alone.”

    Like

    • Considering how things turned out, I couldn’t have done any worse by actually pursuing the career I wanted. 🙄

It means so much that you understood what I meant in that last paragraph. Having lived for so long knowing that I just don’t perceive the world the way most people do, I’m never confident that I’m being clear regardless of how hard I’ve tried. 😕

  9. Seriously having too much fun reading your posts and all things about YOU! We have many things in common and then — we couldn’t be farther apart! I’m huge Sci-Fi fan too and most of your movies, TV and books are, well…up my alley sorta speak. Very cool style…I will say, I was surprised you didn’t list 2001 by Kubrick, but eeeh, it’s all good. Anyways, great fun blog you got here — and I’ll stop saying it, but it was/is a pleasure to “meet” you. Looking forward to reading more of your stuff! Happy 4th!

    • Happy 4th to you as well Carmen. It’s very nice to “meet” you at last as well. And I’m also glad to learn that we share some similar tastes. But I guess I had already sensed that when I decided to subscribe to your blog. 😀

I’m so glad you like my blog. I’m still learning how to use WordPress, and I plan to keep “tweaking” it so that it’s even more enjoyable and easy to use. Please feel free to make suggestions or to point out things that aren’t working quite right.

I just wasn’t that impressed with Kubrick’s 2001 when I first saw it. But then I was just a kid, and had never even heard of Arthur C. Clarke. When I finally started reading Clarke, I got a better understanding of the story after reading the book version. I’ve read all of the sequels, which were even better, and I preferred the movie version of 2010 over 2001.

I’m looking forward to reading more of your stuff too. I may not always comment, but I will be checking out what you post!

  10. I always make a point of heading to the “About” section on a blog, just to get a good feel of the blogger’s character. Usually it’s a cheesy, cheery goodwill message, a tirade of utter arrogance, or a display of poorly thought out humour (or, if they’re anything like me, a combination of two and three). You seem alright!

And speaking as someone who’s had his own dealings with depression, I can well understand the feelings of social awkwardness. It used to really play on my mind, but now I’ve decided to embrace to new, broken down me. To quote my namesake, Mr. George Louis Costanza: “I’m disturbed, I’m depressed, I’m inadequate. I got it all!”

  11. I have read your introduction with great interest my friend, to be honest I have not had my Space open for viewing since I joined WordPress and before that I was with Windows Live Spaces for almost four years and the most of that time it was Private too…

I have backtracked to your very first posting because I believe that it is important to gain a little knowledge of the peeps that we welcome into our world, yes a virtual world I know but along the way some good friendships are forged in these habitats and if one is to become a friend then it is only right that one should show an interest in the the Authors Space and from what I have learned so far from your preface is that I can instinctively recognise that I will enjoy browsing and commenting upon your pages, and so I Androgoth welcome you to call by My Gothic Realm anytime that you are in the neighbourhood…

Take a seat and rest a while, there will be horrors of plenty and hopefully the odd smile here and there as I attempt to add a little humour into My Dark Gothic World. It is indeed a friendly Space my friend and as we fellow bloggers journey across the voids of Space, capturing within it the essence of our individual environments I am sure that there will be some exciting times ahead.

    Be very well my friend…

You stopped by and left a kind comment, thank you very much.
I would like to say that I use humor often, it is my way of cutting through all the negative things in daily life. Besides I would rather smile, than have those droopy frown wrinkles later on. Ya know the mean granny face….LOL
