Awake?

These dreams go on when I close my eyes
Every second of the night I live another life
These dreams that sleep when it’s cold outside
Every moment I’m awake the further I’m away
(Further I’m away)

Heart – These Dreams  (Video | Lyrics)

To say I grew up around some pretty superstitious people would be, at the very least, a monumental understatement. Yes ma’am, just take your pick from the Paranormal Encyclopedia and I’m sure I’ll recall at least one person from my childhood who claimed definitive “experteze” in that area. And, as anyone who’s followed this blog for a while can attest, the struggle to keep my head above water while being repeatedly dunked in that river of superstition has had a profound impact on my life.

Oddly enough though, the subject that I heard about the most as a kid – the actual subject of this post, isn’t listed in that encyclopedia. And that is the subject of dreams. But no problem. All anyone has to do is look up “Dream” on Google, or “Dream” on Wikipedia, to see that the subject of dreams has not been neglected. Oh no, not by a long shot. I even hear there’s an iPhone app in the works that allows you to program them in advance!

I know I’ve had some real whoppers in my time – dreams that seemed so realistic that I genuinely found it hard to believe that they weren’t, in fact, real. Hell, just yesterday I jerked awake from a nap because something in my dream reminded me of a lost jacket. I was actually staring into my closet, scratching my head and wondering, when I realized that the jacket actually existed only in the “reality” of yet another dream.

I’ve also had several distinctly different series of recurring dreams. One, in fact, that has been going on for years with new “episodes” coming whenever they please. And I’ve had a few of the so called “lucid dreams” as well, where I’ve been able to “direct the action” to a limited extent. And don’t even get me started on the dreams I had when I was in a coma for nearly three weeks.

But I’ve never had, or heard of anyone else having, a dream experience like the one Detective Michael Britten (Jason Isaacs) is having in NBC’s new Awake TV series!

Damn, this show is beyond fascinating, and it’s potential for surprise is totally off the scale! You can bet that I’ve set my DVR to ensure I see every episode. For more, go to the site linked above. And don’t forget to check out The Awake “Reality Check” Timeline!

BTW, wouldn’t you know that last night’s “Body & Soul” episode of House M.D. was about a little boy whose bad dreams appeared to be actually killing him?!?!

I want ice water.

  1. Dreams always have me ‘Awake’ as to their meanings.. And the Dreamscale recently has been off the scale..As Dreams seem to be having a more profound effect upon us,.. I am told as we are speeding up and our vibrations are changing as the Vales between realities get thinner so too are our dreams becoming more vivid.. But I wouldnt know that for certain..
But I can honesty say, my own dreams IzaakMak have taken on a new reality all of their own so real, I see now every detail and sense and feel the things I touch.. Sometimes Im me, sometimes I am some other at other times Im but an observer watching the happenings.. But what ever is occuring… Something within my own Dreamworld has shifted..
So I relate totally.. ( Will save the vid to watch later..) Thanks for sharing ~Sue

I wish the people I’d grown up around had had your gentle way when it comes to talking about these things Sue. Hearing your thoughts make me wish all the more that I’d had time to talk to my grandfather, who was a full blood Native American. As always, I look forward to your insights.

BTW, although the video playlist has 5 different preview clips from the show, any one of them will provide a good intro to the show… :D

I love that show! I’ve only seen a couple of episodes but what a trip! I wouldn’t listen to the shrinks, I’d just hold on to both sides of “reality” and write a book and become rich and famous…from the confines of my padded cell!
I wish I could have a lucid dream but I think they just come to you when you least want them so I guess I should stop wanting one?

  3. PiedType says:

Dreams — endlessly fascinating topic. I’m with moresennow on the Awake thing. Forget the shrinks; cling to wife and son however possible. Why would he want to stamp out either side and lose that loved one?

I’ve never had a lucid dream. Would be nice sometimes if they were lucid, because their “reality” can be stunning. Weirdest was a recurring dream about my car being stolen. Had it many times, always with my real-life Mazda, always with the accurate real-life mileage on the odometer, and always with the accurate, ongoing count of this being the xth time the car had been stolen! Weird.

Awake poses so many questions that I have to stop the DVR frequently to ponder its implications. Something that occurred to me after I posted this was: What if he’s actually “dreaming” all this while in an accident-induced coma himself?

You knowI have to ask about the car. Was it actually stolen? Did you have reason to think it might be? Was the odometer reading before or after? Curious (i.e. “easily obsessed”) minds want to know! :D

  4. Rincewind says:

ohhhh so going to have to watch this show…

  5. Cool Berman says:

I watch this tv show.Idea was so good but for me fiction was bleh and some script errors in it.Maybe could be much better 1-2 episode later. :D

    • IzaakMak says:

I don’t know how I missed this comment my friend, but miss it I did. Sorry you don’t like Awake. I really think it’s great. The only problem I’ve had with it comes from his switching to the “other reality” during the day. What’s up with that?!?! :D

  6. Scott says:

I can definitely relate–I have extremely vivid, amazing dreams every time I sleep. I believe only recurring dreams should be taken seriously. I had a poetry-writing professor who dabbled in dream research–he said your subconscious mind knows what’s going on in your life before your conscious mind does, thus dreams can tell you what direction your life is taking.

They may not all be recurring though. While I was taking creative writing classes in college, I once had this dream: I’m standing next to my car, with a pad and pencil. I write the word, “tyrannosaurus rex”. Then one appears, right there, glaring down at me with hunger. I quickly erase the word, and the T-rex is gone. Though I only had this dream once, I took it (and still take it) as a warning–to be careful what I write!

    • IzaakMak says:

OMG Scott, dreams as precognition?!?! And as for being careful what I write, I’m amazed at the things I’ve written that seem so totally out of character to the “man of science” I like to think I am. I did a search for “dreams” and got back two pages of posts that I’ve written where they were at least part of the subject matter!

  7. Have to watch this show. As for dreams… they are life. read a stud, some years ago and pre-internet, stating that 80% of dreams are our subconscious working shit out… the other 20% could be classified as predictive.
Of course, this is still coming from an atheist who collects antique Ouija boards and spent 10 years as a High Priestess in a Gaelic coven.
Back to Athheism for more than ten years, I was the kid in grammar school who refused to say ‘One nation under God’ during the pledge of allegiance.
Oh… did I mention science trumps all? Not that I’ll walk under a ladder.
    Damned parents
Be well honey. Dug the writing and beauty in the post.

p.s. have been seeing a shrink since age 14; also a believer in quantum physics, psychics being full of shit (was a pro tarot reader for 5 years; it is ALL about reading people as well as knowing the meaning of the cards) and believer in therapy to treat PTSD, depression, mental illness and simple neurosis.
Whatever gets you through the night ;)

    • frigginloon says:

Tsk, tsk, tsk antique Ouija boards gathering dusk :) I’m onto you !!!! There are probably all of these lost souls just hovering around your boards bitching about your apathy!!!

    • IzaakMak says:

You remind me of so much that I had thought about including in this post Rachael. But I went through a lot of the same conflicted thinking – backed by a similarly contrasted set of experiences – and decided that I was STILL too uncomfortable to delve into it! :???:

BTW, have you ever watched The Mentalist?

  8. frigginloon says:

Dreams!!! Argh!!! I occassionally have the same dream where I haven’t done my assignment and won’t graduate from Uni. I also have the dream where I am in my bed and someone is moving around the room only to wake up in the exact same position. I should never have watched Twin Peaks!!!!!

    • IzaakMak says:

Damn. I knew I should have watched Twin Peaks back when everyone was talking about it. At least I’d know what you were referring to Loon! But seriously, I have had similar dreams, that left me wondering if “The Gawds” were playing with my mind!

  9. poietes says:

Loved Twin Peaks. Love this show. As you know, I’m always talking about my very vivid dreams, and the repeat ones that have scenarios like your jacket.

What’s going to happen to his dual realities when/if he moves to Oregon?
